Bexley Council’s consultation on disposal of a local park gets me rather annoyed!

My response to Bexley Council’s proposal to dispose of West Street Small Park (the annoyed bit is in ‘6’):

The West Street Small Park provides some open space in an otherwise crowded streetscape. It breaks up the mix of houses, flats, shops and light industry nicely, contributing a pleasant green environment as part of the overall experience of West Street. It’s nice for us locals (I live just off of West Street) to have a few trees and a bit of grass in what would otherwise be continuous bricks and mortar. Indeed, if this precious oasis of green is removed, there will no nature between the Riverside Gardens and Lesnes Abbey. We really need to be holding on to the Borough’s “lungs.”

In a part of the Borough with relatively little open space compared to the Danson Parks and Cray Meadows of other areas of Bexley, Erith should be towards the bottom of any list of areas to reduce public greenery. With Erith expanding, we should be looking to protect the town’s small green spaces, not disposing of them. What price this legacy to future Erithians?

The greenery that was left behind when the old swimming baths was demolished is to be concreted over. Don’t take away West Street Small Park. Please.

What a disingenuous list of “alternatives”! How can they be the only options? Surely the Council has the imagination to think of options, or combinations, that are not so stark? Bexley Council appear to be rigging the outcome of this consultation to only allow results that suit its self-serving narrative, and insulting my intelligence in the process.
How can not disposing of West Street Small Park by itself mean £1 million of cuts to services or a rise of at least 2% in Council Tax? How much additional Council Tax will the Council have as a result of the redevelopments of Erith Quarry and the old swimming pool site? Use that to keep a small park!
