A fan’s homage to David Bowie

I’ve listened to David Bowie’s music almost all my life. I’m a fan. So, my celebration of his life was to listen to a typical selection of his songs last night. I gave a blow-by-blow account on my Facebook page. I reproduce the posts here.

Brian Silk My Bowie fest starts with Blue Jean, because even his overtly commercial stuff in the 1980s was amongst the best pop music around.
Brian Silk Brian Silk Next is Five Years, the opening track from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars. I used to perform this song, back in the day.
Brian Silk Brian Silk I’ve had to listen to the next track on the album, as Soul Love is a track that just bursts out of the speakers.
Brian Silk Brian Silk Soul Love made me think of Up The Hill Backwards, from Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps). This is such a musically-clever track!
Brian Silk Brian Silk Ashes to Ashes, on that same album … obviously. A candidate for Bowie’s most geniusful track, this song goes through so many key changes, seemingly effortlessly, and Bowie somehow gets us back to the key he started in. Awesome.
Brian Silk Brian Silk Something from Hunky Dory and I was torn between Life on Mars?, but somehow Changes seems more fitting today. ‘Time may change me, but I can’t trace time.’
Brian Silk Brian Silk Oh! You Pretty Things follows, for some of Bowie’s androgynous lyrics that put him at the forefront of challenging gender and sexuality norms.
Sharon 'Silky' Silk Sharon ‘Silky’ Silk Oh you pretty things! A to the mazing
Brian Silk Brian Silk Big change of tack, as I revisit Sound and Vision, from Low. Such a long intro, but David Bowie more than gets away with it..
Sharon 'Silky' Silk Sharon ‘Silky’ Silk Love this homage ××
Sharon 'Silky' Silk Sharon ‘Silky’ Silk Fashion × sorry a bit mainstream but a track I loved ×
Brian Silk Brian Silk Fashion’s great, and I may come to it, but I’m in Bowie’s Berlin period, so it has to be Heroes.
Sharon 'Silky' Silk Sharon ‘Silky’ Silk Put on your red shoes!
Brian Silk Brian Silk Heroes: “We can be heroes, just for one day.” An anthem for each and every person to win – you can and will have your day, no matter who you are.
Brian Silk Brian Silk I got close with Modern Love, from Let’s Dance, Sharon. More of that cleverer-than-most polished pop from Bowie.
Brian Silk Brian Silk I’ll listen to a couple of mins of Let’s Dance… Ooh, that is actually really good. Music and lyrics that stick.
Sharon 'Silky' Silk Sharon ‘Silky’ Silk Hunky dory is my earliest album!
Brian Silk Brian Silk Mine too
Brian Silk Brian Silk This is only a short listening session, so a quick pop back in time to John, I’m Only Dancing (Again), from Young Americans.
Brian Silk Brian Silk Bed time beckons, so I’ll conclude with the opening track of the same name as his final album, Blackstar. I did listen to a few tracks of Bowie’s brand new album, on Friday, not knowing it’s significance of course. It’s hard to listen to these lyrics.
Sharon 'Silky' Silk Sharon ‘Silky’ Silk Lazareth , poignant x love it already x
Brian Silk Brian Silk Lazarus, then, as I clean my teeth and go find teddy … or womble. Only joking – I won’t bother cleaning my teeth.
